Michigan City police responding to increase in Craigslist scams

Police in Michigan City say they have responded to several calls about fake rental scams online.

Cyber-security has dominated the headlines in the last couple of days, and local scam artists have managed to steal hundreds of dollars from area residents in the last few weeks, according to ABC 57 News.

Michigan City Police have received several calls about home rental scams from Craigslist that are hitting all over Michiana.

Investigators have compiled a list of ways to identify potential scams:

  1. Look out for legitimate email addresses that aren’t from Yahoo, GMail, or Craigslist.
  2. If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  3. Make sure the photos weren’t lifted from another site.
  4. Be sure you aren’t being asked to use an instant money-sending service or Green Dot Card.

As always, contact the Better Business Bureau if you suspect someone is trying to cheat you.
