Elkhart County employers struggle to find employees in low unemployment setting

(Sam Householder/Elkhart Truth)

The lowest unemployment rate in 17 years in Elkhart County is coming with a bit of a catch.

Some employers are struggling to fill positions in the county, which had a 2.8% unemployment in the month of April. Many of those employers are in the food service industry, according to the Elkhart Truth.

Some restaurants in Elkhart County like Penguin Point on West Bristol Street have had to close early some nights because they don’t have enough employees to cover shifts. A shift manager at Wings Etc. feels employees are passing up the food service industry for much more competitive RV industry jobs.

This effect was on display at the Michiana Career Fair last week. At one point, there were more employers looking to fill positions than actual job-seekers at the career fair, according to the Elkhart Truth.
