FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — A monument marking the playing of the first professional baseball game has been formally dedicated during a ceremony in Fort Wayne.

The event was Saturday at Camp Allen Park.

WANE-TV reports the monument was installed at the site of the first game earlier this month. But cold and rainy weather postponed the formal proceedings until now.

Saturday’s weather again tried to spoil the party.

Fort Wayne City Councilman Geoff Paddock stood under an umbrella to dedicate the monument with Bill Griggs, who heads the local chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research.

Griggs says the monument will help people remember the role Fort Wayne has played in county, state and national history.

The monument sits at the corner of Center and Huron streets near St. Mary’s River.
