Niles man arrested after taking off during attempted traffic stop

A Niles man was arrested after police say he took off in his vehicle during an attempted traffic stop.

It happened around 8:20 p.m. on Saturday, May 27.

Deputies from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department tried to stop the 49-year-old man who they say was speeding in the area Pipestone Road and Evans Road, according to a sheriff’s department news release.

The driver led officers through Sodus and Pipestone Townships before heading north again and turned into the B.P. gas station at Meadowbrook and Pipestone where he was boxed in, the sheriff’s department reported.

The suspect was arrested and booked in the Berrien County Jail on preliminary charges of flee and elude and resisting and obstructing law enforcement.
