Fatal crash U.S 20 in LaPorte County brings yearly total to nine fatalities

A two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning proved fatal for a South Bend man.

US 20 was blocked for a time at County Road 300 East near Rolling Prairie after the collision, and MedFlight was called in, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver of a car, 54-year-old Paul Borkowski, was reportedly driving west on U.S. 20 shortly before 5 a.m. Central time when he crossed the center line into oncoming traffic. He struck a pickup truck head-on.

That truck’s driver, a 51-year-old off-duty Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians tribal police officer from rural LaPorte County, suffered minor injuries.

Borkowski was prounounced dead at the scene. He’s the ninth person to die in a crash on U.S. 20 in LaPorte County this year.
