A semi driver is dead after his truck became wedged underneath a bridge on I-94 Wednesday morning in LaPorte County.

The driver, 28-year-old Lester Faison of Sauk Village, Illinois, had to be extricated from the vehicle and died before he could be transported via helicopter to a local hospital, according to the Indiana State Police.

The crash happened shortly after 6 a.m. Central time during the morning commute at the Johnson Road Bridge.

A hazmat team was also called out, as the truck was hauling paint and food items, and some of the load ended up in the Trail Creek waterway.

There were delays on the interstate Wednesday morning. Two eastbound lanes were closed while clean-up took place. Authorities are recommending people avoid the area until the truck can be removed from the underpass.
