Five children among nine seriously hurt in crash south of Shipshewana

A major crash south of Shipshewana late Wednesday sent nine people to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, including five children.

The crash happened at about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday on C.R. 600 W at U.S. 20. A van hit the side of a pickup truck on U.S. 20 after it ran a stop sign, according to the Elkhart Truth.

Both vehicles went off the road, with the van landing in a ditch and the truck ending up on its side.

Eight people were in the van, including two adults aged 31 and 32 from Wolcottville. The other six were juveniles. There was one person in the pickup truck.

A total of four people went to Parkview Regional in Fort Wayne, three went to Parkview Noble County Hospital, one person eventually had to be airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, and one went to Parkview LaGrange hospital. All had life-threatening injuries.

In addition, the van driver was ticketed for five child safety seat violations, failing to stop at a stop sign, and failing to have a chauffer’s license.
