A child was found wandering the streets of Elkhart early Tuesday morning.

The 2.5-to-3 year old girl was found wandering around the 2500 block of Toledo Rd. at about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Elkhart Police Department.

Both the Elkhart Police Department and Department of Child Services shared her photo, asking the public’s help in locating her mother.

About three hours later, at around 8:30 a.m., the child’s mother contacted police about her missing daughter. Officers say it appears that the child wandered away from the residence while her mother was sleeping after working nights.

The case remains under investigation. Charges have not been filed.

Last month, a babysitter in Elkhart was arrested after a child was found wandering the streets of Elkhart.
