The Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan broke ground on Thursday on a new facility in Berrien County that is long overdue for their needs.

A ceremony took place at the location of the new Humane Society building on M-139 in Berrien County. WSBT reports that the new $2.1 million facility will replace one that has been renovated and expanded since the 1960s.

That building, the county’s only no-kill shelter, has a full capacity of about 50 dogs and 100 cats. The bigger building will offer space for about 150 cats and 100 dogs, housed in separate wings.

The design will also increase efficiency for the staff, create a healthier environment with an improved air system, and be more accessible for the public.

It’s hoped the construction will be finished in 8 months and they are still taking donations to help pay for the work.
