A semi-tractor trailer crashed into the Lane Automotive building in Watervliet Township shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday, but the damage was worse than they initially thought.

Police responded after reports that the semi had left I-94 near mile marker 41 and crashed into the building. The driver, a Florida man, may have fallen asleep according to police, who are still investigating.

He and a sleeping passenger were treated for injuries. After examining the scene, authorities determined that the semi not only damaged the structure, but also wreaked havoc on the plumbing for the fire suppression system, which in turn flooded a large area of office space, damaging computers and other items.

An estimate of the financial damage hasn’t yet been given.
