The large plume of smoke in the air over St. Joseph County in Michigan is from a massive fire near White Pigeon.
The fire, at Green Stream Reycling, in the 69000 block of M-103 in Mottville Township, has been burning since about 4 p.m. on Monday, June 26.
The fire has damaged several buildings and is consuming piles of mulch and wood debris.
In all, more than 20 acres of land has been charred, which is more than half of the size of the business property. Fire crews said the blaze is considered “contained”, even though it continued to burn through the overnight.
Fire crews from around 20 different departments in southwestern Michigan and northern Indiana are at the scene trying to knock the flames out, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at The Elkhart Truth.
They are being challenged by dry and windy conditions, as well as the fact there are no hydrants nearby. All the water they’ve been using to fight the fire by land and by air has been transported in.
Traffic on M-103 has been block between Barker Road and US 12 due to the fire, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Trucks entering and leaving frequently here. High winds no doubt hurting fire efforts here. pic.twitter.com/BICbVVbPSq
