Former South Bend Police Chief announces retirement from law enforcement

After 30 years of fighting crime and surviving legal charges in a wiretapping case, Darryl Boykins is turning in his badge and calling it a career.

The South Bend Police Athletic League announced on their Facebook page Friday night that Boykins would retire. Boykins actually founded the Athletic League and helped the program grow to 300 to over 500 participants every year.

Boykins was the police chief in South Bend until 2012, when he was demoted as part of an investigation after it was revealed an officer’s desk line was accidentally being recorded. Boykins insisted the recording be continued to make sure the officer wasn’t being disloyal, according to the South Bend Tribune.

A special prosecutor decided in 2015 to not pursue criminal charges against Boykins and others in the case.
