Notre Dame is going green with some new green fields.

Three new underground geothermal fields have been installed this summer. The fields are designed to lower campus carbon dioxide emissions. The South Bend Tribune reports that the fields will aid with reducing the use of natural gas and coal and creating long-term savings at the school.

The fields are located underneath the grassy quad east of the Hesburgh Library, under the parking lot just south of Notre Dame Stadium, and under the athletic fields and marching band practice center near the Stepan Center. Right now, only the field near the libary is operational, with the other two coming online in 2018 and 2019.

The fields cost the university about $40 million.
