Ideas sought for proposed Coal Line Trail in South Bend

A new multi-use trail in South Bend could debut in 2021, but city officials need your ideas.

A public meeting for the proposed Coal Line Trail took place Thursday. The trail used to be home to an old rail line. In fact, the old Coal Line bridge that spans the St. Joseph River near Angela Boulevard remains covered in moss and is gated off to the community. But it would find new life again as part of a 1.2 mile pedestrian trail if plans move forward.

WSBT is reporting the trail would cost about $3.5 million to create, with an 80/20 federal to city funding split. It would span from Lincoln Way West to Riverside Drive in the first phase in 2020, then continue to the East Bank Trail a year later.

Don’t waste the money, instead use the money to restore the streets downtown to a useable configuration. Maybe four lanes wide and one-way streets.

But they don’t want you driving, they want you walking or riding your bike from your sustainable development housing area…easier to keep track of that way.

This just looks like another crime magnet/policing issue in development.
