The search continues for a South Bend man who went into the St. Joseph River downstream of the East Race Saturday morning.

41-year-old Donald “Donnie” A. Lewis went into the water shortly after 6:15 a.m. Saturday. It’s believed by Indiana Conservation Officers that Lewis was trying to retrieve a pair of shoes that were tossed from a nearby shore. He slipped and ended up being swept further into the river by the current.

A witness says Lewis was struggling in the water and didn’t see him make it back to shore.

Conservation officers and South Bend Police have been searching the waters ever since, but Lewis has yet to be located. If you have any information about Lewis’ disappearance, contact the Indiana Conservation Officers central dispatch center 1-812-837-9536 or the South Bend Police Department 1-574-235-9201.
