Drunk driver hits nine cars on South Bend street

A drunk driver struck nine vehicles Saturday night, and the victims on Huey Street on South Bend’s Northwest side are seething.

One of the neighbors, whose car was not damaged, told ABC 57 that a lack of stop signs seems to encourage motorists to speed through the area all the time.

Another of the homeowners, whose car wasn’t as fortunate, said the driver was probably going 50 or 60 miles per hour. The crashes and brush-bys stretched from the 1200 block to the 1800 block of Huey Street.

When the driver finally came to a stop he was pulled from his vehicle and held down by the residents of the street until the police and paramedics came. He was found to have a blood alcohol level nearly four times the legal limit.

Formal charges are pending.
