Train whistles return to some South Bend intersections

This week marks a renewed effort by the City of South Bend as they try to silence train whistles at crossings in the city.

The Grand Trunk Railroad started sounding whistles again as of Saturday night, due to what they call inadequate safety measures that would eliminate the need for the whistles.

WSBT reports that this affects several crossings in the city, namely Greenlawn Avenue; as well as Ironwood, 26th, 30th, 35th, and Logan Streets.

Ten years ago the city was certified as having proper quiet zones, but rule changes have put those zones below the minimum threshold for quiet train trips. South Bend is working with the Federal Rail Administration to resolve the problem.

Extortion at its finest. July 24, 2017 at 1:23 pm

So block the tracks. Grand Trunk Railroad thinks they can do whatever they want in our city. I say we need to turn the tide and show them their train only goes through our city because we allow it to. Also, only under our speed limits and whistle less intersections. Grow a pair mayor buttidick-if you can! We are being served some real extortion by Grand Funk Railroad!
