Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus found in South Bend

Some mosquitoes in South Bend have tested positive for West Nile.

St. Joseph County is one of nearly two dozen counties where mosquitoes carrying West Nile have been found this year. Only two human cases of West Nile have been confirmed this year, but neither case is in St. Joseph County.

Health leaders remind you to avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are active, especially late afternoon, dusk to dawn, and early morning and, if you are outside, use an insect repellent containing DEET to your clothes and exposed skin, and to keep screens on your windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of you home.

They also say to discard old tires, tin cans, ceramic pots or other containers that can hold water.
