Niles man who strangled girlfriend in suicide pact appears in court

A Niles man who has admitted to stranging his girlfriend to death has benen ordered to have a mental competency exam.

James Huffman turned himself into police a few weeks ago, admitting that he strangled Angela Cluver a few days prior. Her body was found in their home and was starting to decompose.

Huffman’s attorney Tuesday stated that he’s not sure Huffman can aid in his own defense. He also stated Huffman is struggling with suicidal thoughts, but can’t take medication for it due to religious reasons.

Court documents state that Huffman had a suicide pact with Cluver, but after killing her, he couldn’t kill himself.
