A guilty plea for a Michigan man accused of killing a baby will stand.

32-year-old Brandon Beshires is serving a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole for killing 8-month-old Carter Donovan. Donovan died of severe head injuries after Beshires slammed his head on the bathroom floor because he wouldn’t stop crying.

The Herald-Palladium reports Beshires admitted during his guilty plea that he wanted to kill the child, but then claimed not long after his prison sentence started that he wasn’t mentally competent enough to knowingly made his guilty plea.

A Berrien County judge denied Beshire’s request to withdraw his guilty plea this week.
