An explosion on a Port Authority barge threw three crew members off the boat, injuring two in the process.

It happened in Michigan City’s Washington Park Marina at about 2:30 p.m. CT Friday. The explosion happened inside the barge, forcing three crew members on it to go flying into the air and into the water, according to ABC 57.

Two crew members suffered non-life threatening injuries t their lower extremities. The third crew member went to the hospital as a precaution. The barge ended up upside down inside the channel.

“We heard the boom… It sounded like a piece of steel dropping in NIPSCO until we went back into the harbor, we heard that the work barge blew up inside the channel,” bystander Carl Stahulak told ABC 57.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard is on hand to minimize any pollution after some fuel leaked into the lake water.
