An attempted burglar got away for about 12 hours after trying to burglarize a home LaPorte County.

The attempted happened early Friday morning shortly after 12:30 at a home on County Road 900 South near Westville. ABC 57 reports that the homeowner discovered the burglar in a pole barn on his property after spotting someone with a flashlight behind his home.

The homeowner reportedly grabbed a rifle and, when he encountered the burglar, got in a physical confrontation with him that resulted in the homeowner wrestling a handgun away from the suspect. The suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Charles Appleberry, then fled and a K-9 lost the suspect’s scent two miles away.

Westville schools were put on soft lockdown the following morning due to concern the suspect was near, but that was lifted around noon when Appleberry was caught.
