South Bend destroys homeless wooden skids as it prepares to disband Main Street camp

Wooden skids that the homeless were sleeping on underneath the Main Street viaduct in South Bend have been confiscated and destroyed.

Those skids were donated by non-profit group Michiana Five for the Homeless, whose leader called the action “cruel, unfair, and not legal.” John Shafer told the South Bend Tribune that those skid were donated so the homeless would have a dry place to sleep while water from the bridge flows underneath them.

The city ended up destroying 20 of the 30 skids the homeless had. Shafer feels those skids were their personal property and shouldn’t have been taken from the homeless.

The move comes as the city prepares to disband the encampments for the winter Wednesday.
