Alleged leader of Elkhart County drug ring goes to trial Monday

The alleged leader of a major Elkhart County drug ring goes to trial Monday.

However, 57-year-old Luis Jaquez had a trick up his sleeve in the week leading up to it. The Elkhart Truth reports that he tried to dump his defense attorney Friday.

Vincent Campiti is regarded as one of the best in the region, and the judge noted that when denying Jaquez’s request, even when Jaquez vowed to not cooperate with Campiti during the trial.

Jaquez is charged with two counts of dealing methamphetamine and corrupt business influence. He faces 66 years in prison.

Others in the drug ring that bears his name have either been convicted, taken plea deals, or are still awaiting trial.
