First taste of lake effect snow causes traffic chaos in Michiana

(Photo supplied/ABC 57)

Today’s first dose of lake effect snow has caused havoc on the roads.

That of course includes the Indiana Toll Road, where both eastbound and westbound lanes were closed at various points Thursday morning. A jackknifed semi closed the westbound lanes while a pickup truck hauling an RV jackknifed and closed the eastbound lanes.

That doesn’t even count other slide-offs reported on the toll road east of the U.S. 31 exit in South Bend and between the LaPorte and Michigan City exits.

Other crashes were reported in Berrien County on I-94 and in Van Buren County on M-51, and there were some fender benders in the South Bend area along slick city streets.

A reported 32-car pileup in I-94 in Paw Paw closed the highway for a couple hours Thursday morning.

We’re not out of the woods yet, as at least three inches of snow is forecast for northern Indiana on Saturday.
