Bitter cold, complete with sub-zero wind chills is settling into Michiana for the next few days. With that, the National Weather Service of Northern Indiana has issued a Wind Chill Advisory in effect until 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

Lake effect snow will fall today into tonight across parts of the area, but it won’t snow the entire day. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through tonight for Berrien County, where another 3-6” is possible. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for La Porte, St. Joseph and Cass Counties for an addition 2-4”. The best timing for a heavier band of lake effect snow appears to be late afternoon into the evening.
A few snow showers and flurries remain possible tonight into New Year’s Day with bitterly cold temperatures moving in through the remainder of the week. Another round of lake effect snow looms mid-week with a moderation in temperatures by next weekend into the 20s.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy with lake effect snow showers. Low of 2.
New Year’s Day: Mostly cloudy with a chance of a few L.E. snow showers, highs near 10.
Tuesday: Plenty of sun. Highs in the upper single digits.

The cold wind chills will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin. Expect wind chills to range from 10 below zero to 25 below zero. * WHERE...Portions of northern Indiana, southwest Michigan and northwest Ohio. * WHEN...From 10 PM EST /9 PM CST/ this evening to noon EST /11 AM CST/ Tuesday. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The greatest danger to those outdoors will occur tonight and again Monday night into Tuesday morning. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Wind Chill Advisory means that cold air and the wind will combine to create low wind chills. Frost bite and hypothermia can occur if precautions are not taken. Make sure you wear a hat and gloves.
