Fires destroy Elkhart County barn, South Bend garage

The extreme cold Tuesday night and Wednesday morning made conditions miserable for firefighters in Michiana.

A family lost several rabbits in a barn fire Tuesday night in Elkhart County. The fire grew large enough to threaten another barn nearby with chickens, but was contained before it had a chance to spread.

Seven different fire crews battled the fire and the elements for several hours. The barn was on County Road 7 in Elkhart County. No injuries were reported other than the barn animals who perished.

And a garage was destroyed in a fire around 2:50 Wednesday morning in the 19 thousand block of Pasadena Avenue in South Bend. The garage was a total loss and no injuries were reported.
