Police tend to woman at South Bend Steak ‘n Shake suffering from gunshot wound

A 56-year-old man is in jail after police say he shot his estranged wife.

The shooting happened on Tuesday, Jan. 23, on Rivers Court in Niles.

Investigators say the victim was being driven to Memorial Hospital for treatment, but didn’t make it, and stopped at the Steak ‘n Shake on State Road 933.

James Robert Lampson is expected to be extradited back to Michigan on attempted murder charges.

His wife was last listed in stable condition.

Michigan State Police released the following information about the shooting:

The Michigan State Police Niles Post was contacted by the St. Joseph County Indiana Police Department in regards to a shooting. 

Officers from St. Joseph County responded to Steak N Shake on SR 933 on a report of a victim of a shooting. 

Officers found a female victim suffering from gunshot wound.  The victim was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment and is expected to survive. 

Her estranged husband was identified as the suspect and he was arrested at the scene. 

The suspect currently is lodged at the St. Joseph County Jail pending extradition back to Michigan where he faces attempted murder charges.

Detectives and troopers from the Niles Post are continuing the investigation at the scene.
