Teenager killed in shooting on South Bend’s west side

A 17-year-old boy has died after being shot on South Bend’s west side.

The shooting happened around 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, at a home on the 4000 block of Silver Lane, near the Sample/Mayflower intersection, according to the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit.

The South Bend Police Department received a report of gunshots fired in the area, Metro Homicide reported.

Officers arrived to find the teenager suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

The victim, identified as Daekwon L. Tobar, was taken to an area hospital in critical condition and later died.

The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is currently handling the investigation

Several witnesses have been interviewed by Metro Homicide investigators.

Neighbors told 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at ABC 57 they heard six to 12 shots and saw the victim lying in the yard of a home.

As of 2 a.m. on Sunday, there was no suspect information released and no arrests made.

An autopsy is expected to be scheduled for Tuesday in Fort Wayne.
