Arrest made in South Bend hit and run involving 2 year-old child

A South Bend man is in custody after a 2-year-old child was struck in a hit and run crash Tuesday afternoon.

Police believe 36 year-old Robert Bachtel was the driver who hit the child before fleeing the scene around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of East Indiana Avenue in South Bend.

The child, who was left injured in the street, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Residents say Indiana Avenue has had a problem with speeding cars for some time now.
