Power outages, damage reported after severe thunderstorm wallops Michiana

The season’s first severe thunderstorm hit Michiana on Wednesday evening, May 2.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. for several counties in the 95.3 MNC listening area, including St. Joseph, Elkhart, Laporte, Marshall, Kosciusko, Starke, Pulaski, LaGrange and Noble counties in Indiana and Berrien, Cass and St. Joseph Counties in Michigan.

Wind speeds exceeding 60 miles per hour, pea-sized hail and heavy rain were reported as the storm pushed through.

Soon after the storm passed, reports began coming in about downed power lines and scattered damage. More than 5,100 I&M customers in the Michiana area were reported to be without power as of 5 a.m. on Tjhursday.
