In the early morning hours of Thursday, officials were at the scene of a train derailment near Nappanee that injured two people on the train.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department say the two injured people were on the train, and were transported to area hospitals. They were said to have been alert when the ambulances arrived and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

County Road 15 was closed early Thursday morning, though the derailment was not close to any crossings.

Deputies reported that the wreckage featured 15 to 20 derailed boxcars and went on for about a quarter of a mile. The train consisted of two locomotives and at least 30 cars. Authorities say none of those boxcars were carrying any hazardous materials, and it’s unclear if the stormy weather overnight in the region had any impact on the derailment.

This is a developing story.
