As votes continue to be recounted in the St. Joseph County Sheriff Democratic Primary, a potential third candidate might be ready to throw his hat in the proverbial ring.

Two time South Bend Police Chief Chuck Hurley is planning on filing to run as an independent candidate for St. Joseph County Sheriff. Why? Well, he didn’t mince words when he spoke to ABC 57 about it.

“We have two weak candidates who came out of the primary and I think the citizens of St. Joseph County deserve better than that.”

Hurley needs to collect 1,400 signatures by the end of the month to do so.

Hurley says current Sheriff Mike Ggrzegorek, who previously endorsed Tim Corbett, encouraged him to run after Democrat Bill Redman and Republican Paul Jonas emerged from the primaries as winners.
