Only South Bend charter school, Xavier School of Excellence, shuts down

The only charter school in South Bend will be shutting down.

Indiana’s Charter School Board says it will not sponsor the Xavier School of Excellence, which will force it to close. WSBT reports that Xavier requested state sponsorship in March after Ball State University announced it would no longer sponsor the school, due to financial issues and failing grades.

The state says it’s unaware of any charter schools looking to operate in South Bend for the upcoming school year to fill the void that will be left by Xavier.
