West Nile Virus has been detected in Elkhart County.

The Indiana State Department of Health confirmed the findings this week to ABC 57.

The West Nile Virus is known to cause a rash, fever and body aches. It’s transmitted to humans through mosquito bites from mosquitoes carrying the virus.

West Nile is usually found in Michiana every year and one health official says it can also be found in birds in the area.

The virus can especially be deadly to the elderly and people with chronic illnesses.

Despite the presence of the virus, there have been no reports of any human cases in Elkhart County so far.

Good ways to keep the virus from spreading include using mosquito spray with DEET and clearing areas of standing water.
