Man dies after South Bend house fire Tuesday morning

(Abby Lutz/ABC 57)

Update: During a press conference, police corrected themselves and said an adult man died in the fire, not a boy.

A man died Tuesday morning at Memorial Hospital after an overnight house fire.

South Bend Police report the victim was in critical condition with burns to more than 90 percent of his body when he was rescued from the house. Shortly after 8 a.m., it was announced that he had succumbed to his injuries.

Fire units responded to the blaze in the city’s Lasalle Park neighborhood on Bonfield Place around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. Two other people escaped the fire on their own.

Early reports suggest the fire was accidental in nature.
