Greene Township officials hold meeting on changing school district

Greene Township is taking another step toward seceding from the South Bend Community School Corporation.

Officials in St. Joseph County’s Green Township held a meeting Wednesday night to discuss the possibility of leaving the South Bend Community School Corporation in favor of John Glenn School Corporation.

Nearly all of the parents who attended the meeting were in favor of changing districts, due to the fact that they no longer have a school nearby. Greene School was closed by the SBCSC as a result of the “Focus 2018” program. South Bend school officials say they would like to keep the Greene Township students, and John Glenn officials say they would welcome them.

Any change could take over two years to complete, including a petition for a ballot proposal.

Disagreement between the two school systems would complicate the matter.
