It’s 40 to 60 years in prison for a man in southwest Michigan who pleaded no contest but mentally ill to two counts of second degree murder.

Alex Perez, 26, was charged with killing his ex-girlfriend, Renee Mitchell, 27, and her father, John Mitchell, 67, in Coloma in 2016.

Prosecutors say Perez then took off with his two daughters. An Amber Alert was issued for the missing girls.

Police found Perez and the children in Colorado.

In court on Monday, Perez apologized for the killings and said he hoped it’s something that could be understood by God.
