Mishawaka Police called to pet store for animal welfare check

A welfare check was conducted at a Mishawaka pet store after complaints that the dogs were in dirty cages without food.

Mishawaka Police and the Humane Society of St. Joseph County went to the Pats Pets store at University Park Mall Wednesday.

Mishawaka Assistant Police Chief Jason Stefaniak personally took photos of the dogs in clean cages with full bowls of food and posted them on Facebook.

A mall spokesperson says officials were satisfied with the situation and that Pats Pets officials have told them “that staff are on-site during a continuous rotating schedule” and that the pets will be protected from nearby renovations.
