A Michigan City woman was critically injured when a large tree limb happened to break off and fall right as she was driving under it.

It happened at about 12:45 p.m. CDT Friday near the intersection of Greenwood and Woodland Avenues in Michigan City.

When police arrived, WNDU reports they observed smoke and fire coming from the vehicle, with the large tree limb still across the hood of the SUV. A young woman was still inside the vehicle with what officers say was a “severe injury.”

The Jaws of Life were used to get the woman out while portions of the now-burning limb were removed. The fire was eventually put out.

The woman eventually had to be flown to a nearby trauma center because of the severity of her injuries.

Michigan City Police thanked Good Samaritans that stopped to help at the incident.
