Berrien Township boy has to have part of hand amputated after fireworks mishap

A 12 year-old Berrien Township boy had to have part of one his hands amputated after a mortar-style firework instantly exploded in his hand while it was being lit Sunday night.

Michigan State Police say he also sustained injuries to his face and other hand. Two nearby adults were not injured.

He was taken to Ann Arbor for treatment at the University of Michigan.

The explosion is under investigation.
