Berrien Springs man killed, Niles woman arrested in deadly hit-and-run

A Berrien Springs man was killed and a Niles woman was arrested after a deadly hit-and-run crash in Berrien County.

The collision happened around 4:10 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 15 when witnesses told police  a small Ford SUV struck a bicyclist on Pokagon Road near Jones Road.

Deputies found the bicyclist, Todd Harrington, 32, of Berrien Springs, dead at the scene.

A witness and his young son gave police a description of the vehicle and license plate number, which police used to find the address of the registered owner, a 23-year-old woman, who was arrested on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated causing death and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Preliminary results indicated that the suspect driver’s blood-alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit.

Todd was only about 2 miles from home. He biked every day for fitness and was doing really well. He shouldn’t have been hit. He’s leaving behind many who love him, including my son who was his best friend since they both were 5 years old.
