4-year-old autistic boy left on South Bend school bus for hours

The South Bend Schools’ Transportation Department is under fire again, after a 4 year-old boy with special needs was left on a school bus on Monday, Oct. 8.

Worse yet, the school didn’t inform the parents that he wasn’t at school, according to the boy’s mother who says she discovered his absence when she arrived at the school to pick him up, WSBT reported.

The child, who is slightly autistic, is bused to a different school three days a week and it was one of these days where he was left behind on the bus for three hours, WSBT reported.

The school is investigating and a police report has been filed.

The school corporation says their drivers are “trained to walk the interior of the bus from back to front after each route to verify that no student has been left on the bus,” and adds the employees involved have been placed on administrative leave.
