Elkhart police officer arrested for operating a vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance

An off-duty Elkhart police officer was arrested for operating a vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance.

Officers with the Elkhart Police Department were called around 2:35 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18, to 3rd Street and Franklin Street, regarding a property damage crash  involving two vehicles, according to a news release from the Elkhart Police Department.

The driver of one of the vehicles, identified as Scott Haigh, 41, of Elkhart, appeared to be operating a motor vehicle while impaired, the news release stated.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department was called to the scene to perform field sobriety test and a drug recognition exam.

Haigh failed the test and was arrested  on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance, the news release stated.

Haigh is ranked as a Corporal and has been with the department since April 2009.
