ALBION, Ind. (AP) — A northeastern Indiana man has been ordered to spend 65 years in prison in the slaying of his neighbor’s 2½-year-old daughter.

Trevor Wert was sentenced Monday in Albion, about 25 miles northwest of Fort Wayne.

The 42-year-old Wert pleaded guilty Dec. 5 to murder. Authorities say he was babysitting Railee Ewing in October while her mother was at work. He lived next door to the family in Albion and they had children about the same age.

The girl was beaten to death after waking up Wert by turning on a bathroom faucet. She was struck several times and kicked, which caused her to slam into a door frame.

WANE-TV reports that Wert previously had babysat Railee for her mother, Misty Matson.
