Man arrested after domestic disturbance leads to police pursuit in Elkhart

Police in Elkhart have identified the suspect who was apprehended after two chases connected to the same call on Wednesday.

Fernando Ugalde Garcia, 39, was named as the suspect in a domestic disturbance on Lexington Avenue on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

was being sought around the Hunter’s Pond Apartments after he abandoned his vehicle and escaped on foot. Many officers, a canine unit, and even a drone were brought in to search for him.
He was spotted walking out of a storage shed in the area and taken into custody.

The Elkhart Police Department released the following information about the call, pursuit and arrest:

On Feb. 6, 2019 at 11:06 a.m. officers were dispatched to 730 W. Lexington in regards to a domestic incident.

It was reported by the victim that she was in a verbal argument with her boyfriend. The
accused confined the victim and her children in the Kitchen/dining room for an unknown amount of time. The victim stated that just before calling the police the accused had come downstairs and was arguing with the victim. The altercation turned physical when the accused forced the victim to the floor. The accused was holding a handgun at the victim and her children and took their cell phone and the contents of their pockets.

The victim was able to break free and starting running to a phone to call police. The accused shot at the victim, however missed. The victim was able to contact the police at this point. The accused left in a vehicle. The accused was observed driving by an officer. The accused fled from the officer in his vehicle and led police on a vehicle pursuit that ended in the area of Osolo Rd and Rain Tree Dr. The accused then exited his vehicle and fled into a wooden area north east of this location.

Officers set up a perimeter and tracked the accused with a K-9 and a drone. Two Elkhart County officer and one Indiana State Trooper were in the area and assisted with the tracking and perimeter. The accused was later located trying to flee on a bicycle he had just stolen and arrested by officers.
