Man charged in connection with deadly hit-and-run crash on McKinley Avenue in Mishawaka

A man who St. Joseph County prosecutors say was behind the wheel of a deadly hit-and-run collision on McKinley Avenue in Mishawaka has been arrested.

Vincent B. Hunter, Jr., 26, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

It was late Thursday night, Feb. 14, when Lester Horrall, 50, of Mishawaka was struck and killed.

On Friday, a detective with the St. Joseph County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team
received a call from an Elkhart police officer that vehicle matching the description of
our suspect vehicle was located at an apartment complex in Elkhart.

The vehicle had damage consistent with the crash.

Hunter, who owns the vehicle, admitted he was involved in the crash and failed to remain at the scene. Hunter told police he was driving eastbound on McKinley Avenue near Filbert and had his girlfriend and children in the car, according to the probable cause affidavit.

He stated that at one point, he struck something. However, he claimed that he was not sure what it was, the probable cause affidavit stated.

Hunter also admitted that his license was suspended, and he knew he shouldn’t be driving, the the probable cause affidavit stated.

Hunter was ordered held without bond at the St. Joseph County Jail until his initial bail hearing, which is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
