Off-duty Indiana State Trooper shot in his Granger home

An Indiana State Police Trooper was shot Thursday night in his Granger home.

St. Joseph County Metro Homicide, St. Joseph County Police, and the Indiana State Police are all investigating the shooting. It happened at the trooper’s home on Conover Dr. near Ash Rd. The trooper has been identified as Matt Makowski.

Makowski was in surgery at an area hospital Friday morning and he was last listed in semi-stable condition. Police say his juvenile son has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting.

The following is a news release from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office:

At approximately 11:08 p.m. Thursday, February 21st, 2019, off duty Indiana
State Trooper Matt Makowski was shot inside his home in the 10000 block of Conover Dr., Granger, Indiana.

Pursuant to protocol, the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit (CMHU) was activated to
investigate the case.

After conducting numerous interviews and gathering evidence at the scene, Trooper
Makowski’s juvenile son has been detained at the Juvenile Justice Center on a preliminary charge of Attempted Murder pending review by the juvenile authorities and the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.

Trooper Makowski suffered a single gunshot wound to his lower extremities and is in semi-stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit of a local hospital after undergoing surgery.
Any further information in this case will come through the Prosecutor’s Office.
