Inmate under medical care dies in Elkhart County Jail

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate who was under medical care inside the Elkhart County Jail.

Brian Banister, 51, was being held on a preliminary charge of operating while intoxicated and resisting law enforcement.

He was being held in the medical ward for treatment for an illness.

At 5:35 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, Banister was found unresponsive in his cell by officers.

Correction’s medical personnel responded, and an ambulance was called to the scene. Medical personnel pronounced Banister dead at the scene.

As a matter of protocol the Elkhart County Homicide Unit was called to conduct a death investigation.
