Benton Township woman, 78, killed in house fire

A 78-year-old Benton Township woman was killed in a house fire.

It happened around 3:20 a.m. on Sunday, May 26, in the 1800 block of Wood Street.

Two people who got out of the home told fire crews that the woman, Virgie Atkins, was trapped inside, according to WSJM.

Crews were not able to get the woman out in time due to intensity of the blaze.

The two people who escaped the fire were treated for smoke inhalation, WSJM reported.

So far, there is no word regarding the cause of the fire.
